What should you do next?

Isolated ACL injuries are generally not an emergency, and it is often best to wait a few days for the swelling to go down before seeing a doctor. If you have a lot of swelling inside the knee, you should see a doctor so that he or she can determine if some of the fluid should be removed in order to make you more comfortable. This process is called a joint aspiration. It can be done in the clinic or the emergency room, and is a very safe way to relieve some of the pain and swelling immediately after a knee injury. Most people with a sore and swollen knee will be referred to an orthopedic sports medicine doctor in order to have their injury evaluated. Orthopedic surgeons who specialize in sports medicine are an excellent medical resources for providing you with a diagnosis and treatment options.
