What should you do next?
Isolated ACL injuries are
generally not an emergency, and it is often best to wait a few days for
the swelling to go down before seeing a doctor. If you have a lot of swelling
inside the knee, you should see a doctor so that he or she can determine
if some of the fluid should be removed in order to make you more comfortable.
This process is called a joint aspiration. It can be done in the clinic
or the emergency room, and is a very safe way to relieve some of the pain
and swelling immediately after a knee injury. Most people with a sore
and swollen knee will be referred to an orthopedic sports medicine doctor
in order to have their injury evaluated. Orthopedic surgeons who specialize
in sports medicine are an excellent medical resources for providing you
with a diagnosis and treatment options. If you need help finding an orthopedic
sports medicine doctor in you area, click on the "Find a Doctor"
